I don't think it's shame that compelled society to hide the nipple, but the associated (sexual) thoughts.

Renaissance and Roman art used nakedness everywhere and all of the time because it was synonym with beauty. We can assume that their society was less sexually miserable than others.

We hide nipples for the same reason we hide penises and vulvas.
