This is a common mistake: Heritability measures the variation of a trait within a population, not the extent to which the trait is given by genes. A heritability of 50% for trait X does not mean that 50% of X in an individual is due to genes and 50% is due to the environment. Instead, it means that genetic differences explain 50% of the variation in X within that population.
